It is told that Caribbean is the origin of rum. Rum is a by-product of the sugar industry. It is made from sugarcane or molasses that undergoes fermentation and distillation processes.
Since rum was relatively cheap, massively produced and easy to store, it became popular among the sailors and pirates in the 17th century. Apart from that, they believed rum with lemon juice could provide vitamin C and prevent occupational diseases at sea, like sepsis and beriberi.
Lately, rum even became one of the trading currencies.
